At 12:53 a.m. Oct. 12, 1998, Matthew Shepard died.
Poudre Valley Hospital, where Shepard had been since shortly after he was found on Oct. 7, released a statement at 4:30 a.m. Oct 12, 1998, detailing that his blood pressure began dropping at the start of the new day. Within an hour, he had died.
Less than 12 hours later, on the White House lawn, President Bill Clinton commented on his death, telling reporters, “In our shock and grief one thing must remain clear, hate and prejudice are not American values.”
The hospital statement ended by noting that Judy Shepard, Matthew’s mother, said, “Go home, give your kids a hug and don’t let a day go by without telling them you love them.”
